Audio
The audio player found in the PlayStation Portable supports a number of audio codecs, including:
- MP3
- MP4
- ATRAC3∗
- ATRAC3 Plus∗
- WAV
- WMA (Only on firmware versions 2.60 or above)
- RSS (Firmware versions 2.70 and higher)
∗ATRAC files may only be played from Memory Stick Duo cards; they will not play from Memory Stick PRO Duo cards.
When music is selected, it may be played with or without a set of five visualisations, and the equaliser may be used change the bass and pitch of the music, with four preset settings:
- Pop
- Jazz
- Heavy
- Unique
The equaliser may only be used when headphones are plugged in.
Video
The PSP can play video only in the MPEG-4 and AVC formats; other file formats such as .AVI, .MPG, .MOV and .WMV may be converted using software such as Media Manager for PSP. Using a resolution of 320×240, an audio sampling rate of 22050 kHz and a video bit rate of 500 Kb per second, a 12 minute video file would be roughly 30 MB, enough to fit on a 32 MB Memory Stick Duo. At the same rate, a hundred-minute feature film can fit on a 256 MB Memory Stick. There are many game and film trailers encoded for the PlayStation Portable available to download, along with film files, both free-to-distribute and copyrighted.
Photos
Photographs and other images may be saved and viewed on the console in the following formats:
- JPEG
- TIFF
- PNG
- GIF
- BMP
Incompatible formats may be converted using software such as Media Manager for PSP or Sony Image Converter 2.
