PLAYSTATION Network (PSN), formerly known as PlayStation Network Platform is Sony's free online service provided for use with the PS3 video game console. Players may create two different accounts via the PS3 console: master accounts (with full access to all settings including parental control) and sub accounts (with desired restrictions set and monitored by the master account holder).

There are a number of features offered by the Network, including:

Online Gaming

Free online gaming is offered, although some developers may charge a subscription fee, as is common with MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) games.

PLAYSTATION Store

The store offers free and premium content to be downloaded to the user's PS3 console, such as try-before-you-buy game demos, downloadable games, not available in retail stores, PS One Classics for the PSP, along with film and game trailers. Unlike other systems, the PLAYSTATION Network does not use a point system for purchases, and all prices are shown in the user's local currency.

Messaging

Players can connect with their online friends through the Network, by sending and receiving text messages, using online video or audio chat and talking with others during game play.

Internet Browser

The PS3 has a fully functional web browser, which supports a wide variety of standards so any site on the Internet can be accessed. The browser also supports most other standard features such as bookmarks.

Updates

PS3 system software updates such as new or revised settings and features, security patches and other items that will change the current operating system can be downloaded through the Network.
