Tapwave Zodiac The Tapwave Zodiac was a Palm OS 5-based PDA created by the US company Tapwave, and commercially released in 2004. It was the first Palm-based device developed with gaming and multimedia as primary considerations, and users could experience console-quality 3D gaming, view photos and video in addition to enjoying standard PDA applications. Two models were available: the Zodiac 1 with 32 MB of memory and the Zodiac 2 with 128 MB. Both could be expanded by slotting in SD cards to give an additional 2GB of storage. However, the unit's multi-functionality seemed to put a number of buyers off; at £269.99 for the Zodiac 1 and £329.99 for the Zodiac 2, the unit was too expensive for those simply looking for a gaming console, whilst its image as a highly capable gaming machine kept it away from corporate buyers looking for a serious PDA. On July 25, 2005, Tapwave announced bankruptcy and that they would no longer provide support for the device. However, the unit still has a relatively small, but loyal fan base who offer support at online communities.
